Winter snow isn’t exactly rare in the Murfreesboro area, but sled-worthy accumulations are, an analysis of 10 years worth of weather data indicates.
Below are counts of weather events in the 37153 zip code (my neighborhood, just southwest of Murfreesboro) for each December, January, February and March from 2004 to 2015, as archived by Weather Underground. Not shown is the count for the most common type of winter weather event: plain, old rain, which happened on 238 days, a figure that would dwarf all others in the chart.
So, snow occured relatively frequently, and often came paired with other types of weather events, such as rain and fog. But if you look at precipitation averages, and even maximums, you can see why sleds in the Murfreesboro area spend most of their time in storage:
