Rutherford scores high on 2014 TCAP despite some slides

Posted on December 20, 2014January 22, 2015 by Ken Blake

Most public schools in Rutherford County posted 2013-2014 TCAP scores ranging above the state norm, although some lost ground in particular subjects relative to their scores from the previous year, the latest data from the Tennessee Department of Education show.

LaVergne High School, for example, dropped nearly 14 percentage points in Algebra I, while Hobgood Elementary’s science and Eagleville 3-8’s math scores slid about a dozen points each. Central Magnet, which has stringent admission requirements, continued to rank at the top of each testing area among both high school and elementary and middle schools.

Among high schools other than Central, Eagleville took the top spot in Algebra I, while Blackman High ranked highest in Algebra II (barely edging out Stewarts Creek), Biology I, English I, and English III. Also among high schools other than Central, Eagleville ranked highest in English II as did Seigel in chemistry. At all county high schools except one, 96.4 percent or more of the students tested proficient or advanced in U.S. History I. At the lone exception, Holloway, 94.7 percent tested proficient or advanced, just under the statewide percentage of 95.9.

Rankings were more varied among the substantially larger number of elementary and middle schools in the county.

School-to-school differences in academic performance can occur for many reasons. For example, low performance at a school can indicate more about the socioeconomic challenges the school’s students face than about the competence of the school’s faculty and administrators.

In some charts, statewide or individual school information is missing, either because the data were unavailable or because the available data were based on fewer than 30 tests.
